Let’s see a show of hands…who saw The Dark Knight in IMAX and remembers how certain scenes would get crystal clear and blow up to full frame?
AICN is reporting that the Batman director is keen on shooting the entirety of his next Bat-venture on old-school 70mm IMAX cameras. If this is true, then the movie will look wicked cool on IMAX screens.
Then again, is there really that much of a difference between 35mm and 70mm when movies are shown on the more lame “smaller” IMAX screens? Probably not.
In fact, I remember seeing The Dark Knight with an audience that ooh’d and ahh’d at all the standard parts of the film which were shot on 35mm. While the IMAX portions were stunning, I don’t know for sure that the clarity really added much to the enjoyment of the flick. After all, it was just so damn good that the format became a non-entity with audiences who were so engrossed in the story they missed many of the IMAX shifts.
Still, it would be cool to see a full blockbuster shot in IMAX. With studios looking for gimmicks to get butts in seats, this makes a LOT more sense than the other option–shooting the movie in 3D.
