Redford steps on Spielberg’s toes with his own damn Lincoln movie

With Steven Spielberg deciding to remake Harvey, Robert Redford has swooped in to lay claim to a film about the Lincoln assassination–something that Spielberg has been sitting on for a long while.

The Hollywood Reporter tells us that Redford is set to direct The Conspirator, a film aboutrobert-redford alleged Lincoln assassination conspirator Mary Suratt.  The movie is expected to start shooting this fall with James McAvoy currently rumorerd to be in one of the lead roles.

You snooze, you lose, Mr. Spielberg.  His Lincoln biopic, appropriately titled Lincoln, has been a long-gestating project with Liam Neeson set to play the sixteenth president.  Who knows what will happen with that now.

I guess it could still happen.  As Quaid taught us, great movies always seem to come in twos.  You know…like Observe and Report and Paul Blart: Mall Cop.

A Spielberg film could still be fine. He was planning a biopic while Redford looks to be focusing squarely on the assassination.

Here’s an idea – Redford should cast the same actors Spielberg had in mind for his film (including Liam Neesen of course) and have the story interweave with Spielberg’s. It doesn’t need to be much, just brief scenes here and there. Then when Spielberg eventually makes his movie, he could do the same thing. Two completely different films that complement each other (much like Flags of Our Fathers and Letters from Iwo Jima). Problem solved. I would definitely watch them both.
