As all the news has come out about the Mattel and Hasbro toy-to-movie adaptations, I have been downright shocked that there has been no movement on a Lego film. But it was only a matter of time.
The trades report that Warner Bros. is now developing a movie version of the popular building block toy. Dan and Kevin Hageman (the little known CG flick Hotel Transylvania) are writing, but there has been no director attached to the project.
If they have serious fun with the concept, this one could be a blast. The “Lego Star Wars,” “Lego Batman,” and “Lego Indiana Jones” game titles have been able to understand that cheeky joy that comes from put-together vehicles, buildings, and people, so as long as the producers assemble a full Lego world (instead of having it be a Toy Story-esque concept), I will give this one the benefit of the doubt.
Personally, I think it would be a blast to see this movie done in stop-motion animation with the actual toys, but I know it will almost certainly be a CG movie. Here’s hoping they get an interesting director and have a good concept for the direction of the movie.
I mean, the Lego movie spoof thing is already so prevalent, why not do an Airplane or Kentucky Fried Movie style film with the toys? Spoof all the current summer blockbusters…the possibilities are endless. And it would have to be better than all the Jason Friedberg/Aaron Seltzer spoof flicks of the past few years.
Regardless, they need a solid concept for the movie to make sense. Otherwise it could be more than cringe-worthy.
