Paul Giamatti as Larry in Three Stooges? Sold!

Why didn’t I think of this before? I’ve been down on the Farrelly brothers’ Three Stooges movie since we first heard of the project, but all it takes is one piece of awesome news to win me over.

3-stoogesWe already know that Jim Carrey will be portraying Curly (maybe…more below), and Denicio Del Toro will rock our faces off with his Moe. For a while, it looked like Sean Penn would play Larry, but he, not unexpectedly, dropped out. Because he realized it was a Farrelly brothers movie, and he was too busy prepping Into the Wild 2 (No, that’s not a real project).

Now we get word from Boston.com that a most awesome actor might be joining the cast in Penn’s stead, and that awesome actor of awesomeness is the awesome Paul Giamatti.

That same article says that Jim Carrey is also off the project, and Curly is still to be cast.  I’m okay with that.  But it begs the question…why isn’t Giamatti taking on the part of Curly, which he seems more physically suited for?

I don’t care.  If he is anywhere near this movie, I’m officially excited about seeing it.  Come on Farrellys, give us your return to greatness.  And try and stay away from the more obvious “bodily fluid” jokes this time.

As a longtime Stooges fan, I think Giamatti as Larry is an awesome choice. (Jack Black, as obvious as it seems, really would be a terrific choice for Curly in my opinion.) However, I’m still not sure how I feel about the project itself. This type of comedy is really dated and that’s a big part of its charm. It just wouldn’t work quite as well with today’s production values (though many would argue that it never worked to begin with). Also, it works better in tiny spurts. The old short films are much-loved and hilarious, but all the feature films they did were atrocious. This sounds like it could be one hell of a disaster.
