What took so long? Brave New World adaptation in the works

Brave New World is one of the few books that it seems like everyone has read at least once. Now I’m happy to report that none other than Ridley Scott will be dipping his toe in the sci-fi/dystopian pond once more to bring us the book’s adaptation.

scottdi_articleRisky Biz Blog reports that Scott is attached to direct the film while Leonardo DiCaprio will act as a producer. I’m a little surprised that this adaptation hasn’t happened sooner. While I wouldn’t call Brave New World universally loved, it does seem like a book that everyone is kind of familiar with and would enjoy a film version of. Oh well, now we are going to have one.

For those of you who didn’t make a trip through the novel (or at least the novel’s Cliff Notes) in high school English, here’s the rundown: the story takes place in the 26th Century where society is stoked about being able to control the birth rate and citizens are divided up into five castes. Since there is no worry of childbirth, everyone lives a super-promiscuous, super-carefree life. This life is disrupted by Bernard, a member of the lower caste who comes in contact with upper caste members and starts to exhibit anti-social behavior and endangers the peace of the society.

It’s a pretty cool book, ahead of its time in many ways. Scott is a good choice for this material and I’m interested to see if DiCaprio will attach himself to the role of Bernard. He would be a good choice for it (I’m a big fan, so I think Leo is a good choice to play everything). I hope this one gets moving into overdrive pretty soon.

Sounds good, but what’s this going to mean for the Alien prequel that he’s supposedly going to be directing? I feel like Ridley Scott is always attached to a bunch of stuff that never ends up happening. Like, remember when he was supposed to direct Blood Meridian? Now it belongs to Todd Field. I feel like one of these projects–Brave New World or Alien–is going to end up happening without him.

DiCaprio will probably wind up piloting this one and will have to hire someone new at the last minute so Scott can do another period piece. I would also like to see what Steven Spielberg could do with this material as well.

Yeah, and doesn’t Scott also have that Monopoly movie on his plate, too? Spielberg sounds like a good choice, but apparently he’s busy remaking Harvey. It’s a crazy world we’re in. Crazy.

Totally off topic, but I don’t see it reported anywhere on the site… Pretty sad film news: John Hughes just passed away. Saw the story here first: http://www.celebsession.com/2009/08/john-hughes-passed-away-this-morning.html

It’s also on msnbc and some major news outlets

Thanks, Shannon. It is very sad news, indeed. Check back here tomorrow when we’ll have a full obituary.

Shannon, we saw that. Instead of throwing up a quick bulletin, we’re working on a more in-depth article that should be up late tonight or early tomorrow.
