Little Red Riding Hood is on her way to a gothic reimagining

Leonardo DiCaprio’s production company, Appian Way, is developing a dark gothic take on Little Red Riding Hood.  As if the original story wasn’t already pretty dark.

littleredAppian Way has worked on the current horror flick Orphan and is partnered with Paramount Pictures for Martin Scorsese’s upcoming thriller Shutter Island, which DiCaprio is starring in.

Little Red Riding Hood, however, is not being planned as a starring vehicle for DiCaprio.  Shame.  I think he would have made an awesome wolf in gramma garb.  (I know, I know, he probably would’ve been the damn hunter.)

I know the formula for this kind of thing.  Just drop the word “little” from the title and you’ve got yourself a bona fide gothic reimagining.  Still, it might be kinda cool.  Perhaps with the right director…(just not Tim Burton, please, that’s waaaaaaayyy too obvious.)

Anyone see that really crazy horror version of Rumplestiltskin? I hope they do that kinda thing. But it’s hard to make a “big bad wolf” really scary–wasn’t there a TV version that ended with the hunter slitting the wolf open and rescuing Red? It was kinda eerie and cool if I remember right.

I’ve seen Rumplestiltskin…it was fabulously terrible, but absolutely fun. Sort of in the spirit of Critters. I would love to see that with Red Riding Hood.
