The Dorian Gray trailer is surprising. And unexpectedly cool.

Maybe I’m letting my “classical literature” prejudices show, but when I first heard “The Picture of Dorian Gray” was getting adapted into a feature, I was less than enthused.  This trailer, though, has me interested.

I think it’s safe to say that a 2009 update of the novel will need to be altered somewhat.  This, though, seems to be taking wild liberties (or is that Wilde liberties? *rimshot here*) with the book.  In addition to changing the title, this one looks to have a style and tone that is decidedly contemporary even though it maintains the original temporal setting.

But it looks damn cool and interesting.  If the filmmakers can up the cool-factor but keep the compelling thematic ideas of the source material, more power to them.

Would Oscar Wilde be turning over in his grave if he could see this?  Probably not is my guess.  That’s just the kind of cool cat he is.

Here’s the trailer from Shock Till You Drop.

I dunno. I’m detecting hints of TV movie–Masterpiece Theater or something.

That looks like fun. Though I don’t remember so many action scenes in the book… ;-)
