Sometimes a casting decision is so ludicrous…so out of left field…that one simply, honestly, cannot find a joke that can do justice to reality. Well, folks, it’s happened again. Rapper Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson is going to play the villain in a remake of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
He will not, however, be playing the other side of the coin (pun intended), Dr. Jekyll. Instead, that part will be played by the incomparable Forrest Whitaker. I guess they got a real actor for that part as it might require…you know…emoting and, well, acting.
This marks the third (that’s right, third) current in-development adaptation of the original novel. The first stars Keanu Reeves (woah.) in both title roles, and the second is being developed by Guillermo Del Toro. As always happens when multiple movies get made based on the same material, it will be a race to the finish line to see who can cash in first.
The Mr. Whitaker/Mr. Cent incarnation of the property will be set in modern times and will be directed by Abel Ferrara.
I hope this one falls through. More than that, I hope this is just a rumor gone awry. But the news comes from 50 Cent himself, via one of the most trusted names in news, MTV. Here’s his quote.
“Yeah, I’m supposed to play Hyde.”
I guess it doesn’t get much more clear-cut than that. Sigh.
