Good God…they’re making a MacGruber movie.

If there is one thing history has shown us, it’s that movies based on gimmicky Saturday Night Live sketches always rock! Wait…nevermind.

MacGruberIn a move that seems to show a serious lack of judgement, Paramount and Relativity Media have fast-tracked a movie based on MacGruber, an SNL skit parodying MacGyver.  In the skit, Will Forte played MacGyver’s son who always finds himself in some dangerous, MacGyver-like situation.  Being very involved in personal matters, though, MacGruber always neglects to solve any problems, usually letting a huge bomb go off at the end of the skit.

Get it?  IT’S FUNNY!

The new movie will star Ryan Phillippe and Val Kilmer and will see MacGruber (Forte will reprise the role he birthed), in retirement as a monk, being pulled back to the states for “one last job.”  It’s basically the premise of Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls.

This movie does have a small shot at being funny, but the original SNL source material isn’t.  It’s one-note, obvious, and dumb.  To make matters more complicated, New Line is currently developing an actual, honest-to-God MacGyver movie.

Will it be a race to cinemas to see which “Mac” can win the hearts and minds of the audience?  Only time will tell.

MacGruber can be funny…the premise is dumb and gets old fast, but silly giggle lines are always sprinkled throughout. (i.e., while disabling a bomb at a dam, “If we don’t defuse this dynamite, it won’t just be our spirits that are dampened. It’ll be the whole town of Cedarville.”)

The thought of a MacGruber movie seems absolutely idiotic. It only works in 1-3 minute doses…and even then, barely.

File this one with “Lady’s Man” as one of the worst SNL skits to the big screen there is…The only thing that could be worse is a reprisal of the character “Mr. Peepers” or the dreaded “Mango” to the big screen… Where is Wayne Campbell and Garth Algar when you need them? I’ll pop in my wayne’s world or coneheads collection anytime before i find any desire at all to see this one…

I thought they were making a mango film? You know, a gay guy going around and acting flamboyant and making people uncomfortable, but everyone falls in love with him?

    Oh wait…I’m thinking of Bruno.

Yeah I guess they figured that Sasha Baren Cohen could carry the concept better then Chris Kattan… After all, look at Borat vs Corky Romano… I liked both movies, they made me laugh. I think I was one of the 12 people to buy corky Romano on DVD though and not try to sell it in a yard sale or pawn shop.
