I hope you’re as big of a Nightmare on Elm Street fan as me, because it looks like Freddy Krueger will be slicing his way through teenagers for years to come.
According to Bloody Disgusting, Jackie Earle Haley, who most recently appeared as Rorschach in Watchmen and landed the role of Fred Krueger in Platinum Dunes’ A Nightmare on Elm Street remake, has signed on for two additional films.
That makes an impending three Nightmare on Elm Street films total…planned…ready to get going.
Maybe I’m crazy but…this seems like really good news. True, I am not 100% sold on the remake, but I like the idea that maybe, just maybe, if the producers are thinking ahead enough to sign actors on to multi-picture deals then they will be forward thinking enough to craft an interesting and ongoing story. Instead of the sequel being an annoyingly tacked-on side note, maybe they plan to have it actually, you know, make sense?
It’s a high hope, but one that I’m going to cling to. Especially considering that Platinum Dunes has signed Rooney Mara (the actress who plays Nancy and whose first name should be her last and vise versa) on for one sequel. So I guess she dies in that one. Bummer.
But forward thinking is a rarity with these remakes, so I hope this franchise breaks the mold. There is more opportunity for good story, great visuals, an interesting tone, and compelling characters with the premise for this horror franchise than there is for almost any other franchise out there. Here’s hoping the producers don’t settle for a cheap thrill.
