After complaining about being the only British actor not involved in the Harry Potter franchise, it seems Bill Nighy has won the role of Auror and Minister of Magic Rufus Scrimgeour.
In an interview with The Independent, Nighy confirmed that he has been cast in the final two films, and Potter fansite The Leaky Cauldron seems to think that his role will be the grizzled Scrimgeour who takes over for Cornelius Fudge after the Minister is unceremoniously booted from office.
Which is great news. Bill Nighy really can do no wrong in my book. From his turn in the Pirates of the Caribbean films to his amazingly fun performance in Love, Actually, the man never ceases to entertain with dry wit, an off-the-cuff sense of humor, and the ability to bring something interesting and unexpected to his roles.
I still can’t watch his brief role as Slartybartfast in The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy without giggling.
But can he handle the gruff, serious, borderline dangerous role of the lion-like Auror? Time will tell, but in a word…yes. I believe he can. I think it will be something different from what we’ve imagined, but anything Nighy comes up with is sure to be a lot of fun.
