Like all kids, she goes through phases of loving films. First it was The Wizard of Oz. Then, God help us all, it was episodes of Dora the Explorer, and then Ice Age.
Most recently, though, my sister has bought young Emily a DVD of 1987′s The Chipmunk Adventure, Alvin and the gang’s only animated feature-length movie and a favorite of mine when I was a kid. I was overjoyed that the young lass had such impeccable taste.
Then a horrific idea washed over me: what if she decided she wanted to see the atrocity that was 2007′s Alvin and the Chipmunks? That just wouldn’t be cool.
For now, though, I’ll just have to trust her better judgement (Dora not included), and pray she doesn’t catch commercials for this new Chipmunk adventure.
This trailer has a couple of cute moments, I will admit, and introducing the Chipettes gave me a little nostalgic flutter. But then I remembered that this is NOT Alvin and the Chipmunks. Those characters were animated, 2-D cartoons that lived in a world with its own logic, and they can’t simply be “ported over” to another medium in tact without something being lost, and that “something” is the essence of what I loved about the Chipmunks as a kid.
Then again, maybe I’m just an old curmudgeonly uncle and those my niece’s age will consider this a classic when they’re in their twenties. On that day, I will realize my usefulness has dwindled and will set sail for uncharted waters in a dingy made of birch.
