Cynicism is perfectly acceptable when in regards to movies like Transformers--black holes of creativity. On this matter, we're discussing movies that actually deserve to be called movies. And certainly there are ten movies a year that can be classified as damn good and well worthy of recognition.

"Why does everyone have to act so damn cynical about it?...Lighten up, people!" Words that ShepRamsey lives by, as we all know from his Transformers articles. :) Just kidding, Shep...we love ya. And I agree wholeheartedly on this matter.

I'm hearing a lot of people complaining about this and saying that there aren't ten worthwhile movies in a year. If this is the case, then why are yearly top ten lists so damn rampant? This, to me, feels like the Oscars simply making their own top ten. What's so wrong with that?

And I think we can all assume that everyone taking part in this discussion must be a movie buff to some degree, so why is everyone saying that there aren't ten good movies in a year? I love movies and as a lover of movies I've never seen a year where I didn't see at least ten movies that I thought were outstanding in some capacity. Why does everyone have to act so damn cynical about it? We're movie lovers! We should be thrilled by this! Lighten up, people!

Rhawk...I like the idea of an unspecified number of nominees, but that would also make the "snubs" all the more terrible. A set number at least makes the process somewhat defined. I don't know...I just want to wait and see how it plays out the first year.

I would think the better solution would be to not have a fixed number of nominees. Nominate however many worthy movies there are that year. Some years I think might be hard pressed to find 10 oscar-quality movies.

It is posturing for bigger movies definitely, but this is very much a step in the right direction. Now more movies will have a chance of winning. It will also open up the field so that the best movie of the year isn't just given a token screenplay nomination, but can also be nominated for the big award. I like this a lot.

I smell more dark horse winners in the future. The only concern I have is that there will still be 5 "real" nominees (with multiple nominations) and 5 great movies that just get the token gesture. That, and I don't want the telecast to get any longer.

Let's hope this isn't just posturing for more ratings with bigger movies.
