Ian McKellen, Andy Serkis and Hugo Weaving Join The Hobbit!

Gandalf…Gollum…Elrond.  Rest easy, fans, they’ll all be back for the Guillermo Del Toro directed Lord of the Rings prequel, and they’ll be played by the right guys.

gollumTheOneRing.net has gotten hold of a BBC radio interview with Del Toro in which he confirms that all three actors will return to reprise their roles in the two-part The Hobbit story.

While this isn’t necessarily surprising news, it’s good to know.  If just one of these actors had declined, fans would be in an uproar.  And rightly so.  The actors really solidified themselves as these characters; each one did a fantastic job, and it would be disappointing to see someone else step in.

Plus I’m a stickler for continuity.

To be honest, though, I’m still not sure how I feel about these films.  Having Jackson back onboard as a producer is encouraging, but I think it will be supremely difficult for the filmmakers to nail the right tone for The Hobbit.  It’s very different from The Lord of the Rings, and I hope they embrace the slightly lighter, adventurous tone instead of pushing everything into the dark, apocalyptic realm of the original films.

Wait and see.  That’s all we can do.

This is great news! I’m not too worried…with Jackson, Philippa Boyens, and Fran Walsh involved, I think they’ll handle it with care. Plus, think of the adventurous, mischievous tones in other stuff from Jackson and Del Toro. It seems like the kind of stuff they thrive on, even if they do have the tendency to get dark sometimes.
