Man oh man, that Martin Scorsese can do anything. And while many people will argue that this is a straight “psychological thriller,” let’s just call it what it is, okay? Horror.
Maybe it’s not the kind of horror whose goal is to have things pop out toward the screen every five seconds. Maybe it isn’t too concerned with scaring teenage girls. But (judging solely by the trailer, mind you) it’s horror, all right, and horror of the old-school variety. The kind that is more about dread and tone than cheap thrills–that allows itself to tell a real story with real characters.
It’s funny…if an unnamed director released this trailer, we’d be throwing it into the genre mold in a heartbeat. When it’s an established and respected director, though, it must be a “mystery thriller” or “psychological drama.” It’s as if people can’t admit that yes, it is horror. AND yes, it is good. We hope.
You know…like The Exorcist.
Anyway, I’ll avoid an unnecessary plot synopsis as the trailer speaks for itself. Looks great to me, though I hope there’s no “twist” ending. If there is, I think maybe I can call it right now.
Check out the trailer below. And if you want another dose of Scorsese’s horror chops, check out this short film we posted a few weeks ago.
