When it was first reported a couple of weeks ago that a prequel to the Alien franchise was in the works, word was that the producers (the Brothers Scott–Tony and Ridley) wanted commerical director Carl Rinsch to direct. But now it appears that Fox has other plans. And in an ironic twist, they’re actually better!
According to Entertainment Weekly, Fox has no interest in greenlighting the film unless original Alien director Ridley Scott is attached to direct–in which case we might be able to start taking this movie seriously instead of thinking of it as another in the line of bastardizations that have been the Alien vs. Predator films.
At a press junket for his new remake of The Taking of Pelham 123, Tony Scott insisted that Rinsch would be directing the film. ”Carl is doing the prequel to Alien…I’m excited because Ridley created the original and Carl is one of the family.”
That last bit is a little interesting, as it’s been rumored that Rinsch got the job because he’s dating Scott’s daughter, Jordan. Which makes me cringe a little bit.
It’s a rare occasion that I find myself actually pushing for the studio’s plans as opposed to the fimmakers’. But I really feel like Fox is on the right track here. I’d love nothing more than to see a new Alien film from the guy that started it all in the first place! And I can’t be alone here.
