You know what the greatest tragedy of summer movie-dom would be? If Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen didn’t get to stay in IMAX theaters for a full four week run.
That’s right, Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, after numerous theatrical delays, is getting pushed back a couple more weeks when it comes to IMAX. According to FirstShowing.net, the film won’t hit the huge screen until two weeks after the movie’s initial release…making sure that Transformers gets four weeks on the specialty screens.
Which is a great idea. I mean, I’m sure two weeks after release, Transformers is going to be pulling in more IMAX business than a brand-new Harry Potter film that has twelve minutes of 3-D footage.
But what about opening night? Surely IMAX will have midnight screenings of the film, right? RIGHT? Sure, but only on two screens. You guessed it…New York and LA.
Seriously, IMAX, how dumb can you be? You’re trading a week’s worth of nearly guaranteed sold-out screenings for the leftovers of the latest Michael Bay fighting robots movie.
I guess the thought is that fans will return two weeks later to see the film in IMAX, but I doubt it. Two weeks after release, most of the family crowd will have moved on to other things, and the IMAX release of Potter will most likely be extremely lackluster. Here’s hoping IMAX comes to their senses in the next couple of weeks.
