Hi all, Quaid here reporting a piece of admittedly suspect news on this slow news day.
According to a source at Moviehole, Robert Rodriguez “is as against the idea of a straight-up remake as much as anyone – which is why they’re considering this an official sequel to John McTiernan’s film.”
Okay, so far so good. I don’t know that a direct remake would really make too much sense…or be any good. So the idea of a loose sequel (meaning some acknowledgement that the events of the first two Predator movies existed) works well for me. No unnecessary creature redesign, no attempt to tell the original story over again–just a movie similar in tone and structure but hopefully with Rodriguez’s flair.
But wait. There’s more. The source also says that “Robert’s camp has just reached out to Arnie’s. But they haven’t had a response yet.”
Arnie…you mean…Arnie Schwarzenegger? The Gubernator has made it very well known that he is a little too busy (solving world problems and such) to make action films, but maybe Rodriguez knows something we don’t…
Apparently Schwarzenegger, should he accept the part, would reprise his role as Dutch Schaefer. This would not be the lead role in the film, but it looks like it would be a lot more than a small cameo.
Sounds like Rodriguez is really interested in respecting the first movie but still pushing it further. The more I think about it, the more I believe Rodriguez is the perfect choice to do something fun and new with this material.
