Earlier it was reported that Fox had plans to remake the original Alien…and everyone furrowed their brows and asked “why?” Now, though, it seems the project has changed–into a prequel.
According to Bloody-Disgusting, Ridley Scott, the original film’s director, is attached to produce, and commercial/music video director Carl Rinsch is set to direct.
So…are we going to get the story of how the derelict spacecraft, marooned on LV-426, got infested with alien eggs? Fingers crossed.
As long as they keep it consistent with the tone and design of the original 1979 film, I’m onboard. Really, there’s very little reason to reinvent anything. Watch Scott’s sci-fi horror opus today, and it holds up remarkably well.

No, I say fingers crossed that they *don’t* try to “explain” the mystery and do a George-Lucas on us and try to show anything of the original Pilot’s race. Because that would truly destroy the one thing that Alien had that made it great – the mystery.
An “origin story” would actually ruin the whole franchise for me. I don’t want this great mystery explained away by some stupid godawful cheap modern horror film concept that teenage boys will masturbate to. Which was, essentially, the only thing the entire horror genre has put out in the last, say, 10 years.

In talking to some other people, apparently I’m the only one who has good vibes when it comes to this. I can absolutely see how the Prequel idea could jump the shark (as if that didn’t happen with Alien:Resurrection), but I am really hoping they do something creepy, respectful and more akin to the original. Yes, if they go overboard with LV-426 things will get messy and boring, but I think you could get a nice “Alien” story that doesn’t hurt the original. I mean, the original will always hold up, and no prequel or sequel can hurt it. But I know I’m in the minority of optimism here.
