Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus clip gives us a taste of Ledger’s performance!

It’s big, it’s bold, and early word is that it could be brilliant.

Am I talking about Terry Gilliam’s long-awaited The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassas?  Not exactly.  I’m talking about Heath Ledger’s performance in the movie.

This movie will be touted left and right as “Heath’s last movie.”  There is already a kind of quasi-underground marketing campaign to sell the movie as such.  It’s no surprise that the first full clip to come out has Mr. Ledger front and center.  I really hope, though, that this movie lives or dies on its own merits, not on it’s late star’s name.

And I hope it is good, and succeeds.  Gilliam at his best is pure magic.

Yes, and Gilliam at his worst is Tideland, so watch out!!
On the whole, I’m not really a big Gilliam fan. I like 12 Monkeys and Brazil, but stuff like Time Bandits and Fear & Loathing (and Tideland, obviously) just leave me cold. I’m not one who minds directorial self-indulgence at all (I’m a massive David Lynch fan, for God’s sake), but something about Gilliam’s is just so damn abrasive. And his obsession with wide-angle lenses gives me a headache.
All that aside, based on this one minute on display here, I have to say that this looks like it could wind up being pretty good. I like Ledger and I like this whole “Imaginarium” idea. I think I’m looking forward to this one.
