Box Office Brief: Angels & Demons topple Trek

Posted on 17 May 2009 by ShepRamsey

Hey friends, it’s Shep with the box office numbers for the weekend and it’s no surprise that the number one film was Angels & Demons, Ron Howard’s Da Vinci Code sequel.

Despite pretty crappy reviews (including my own, which you can find HERE), the movie managed a solid angels_and_demons_ver21opening weekend, pulling in $48 million. It just beat out last week’s number one film, the far-superior Star Trek which made $43 million over the weekend, bringing its total thus far to $148 million.

And the summer’s first blockbuster, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, dropped one spot to number three, bringing in $14.8 million, with a grand total of $151 million (just barely above the total for Trek, which has had a full week less to pull in spectators. Gotta love that word of mouth!)

Number four was the chick flick Ghosts of Girlfriends Past with $6.86 million. It seems to be hanging on despite the handicap of having being a Matthew McConaughey romantic comedy. You’d think that would put more people off.

At number five with $4.55 million is Obsessed. I have no comment on that.

The rest of the top ten includes 17 Again with $3.4 million, Monsters vs. Aliens with $3 million, The Soloist with $2.42 million, Next Day Air with $2.28 million, and, finally, Earth with $1.68 million.
