I hadn’t heard of this one until just five minutes ago and now I’m totally all about it!
Well, I had heard the title being thrown around as one of the big Oscar contenders for this winter, and I knew it was a new Rob Marshall musical, and I knewthat Daniel Day-Lewis was in it…and that alone sounded intriguing.
What I didn’t know, however, is that the film is an adaptation of a stage musical version of Federico Fellini’s classic film 8 1/2. So when I saw that a trailer had been released, I got real nice and jazzed!
Day-Lewis steps into the Marcello Mastroianni role as a filmmaker searching his for inspiration throughout his rich bourgeois life. Rounding out the cast are Judi Dench, Kate Hudson, Penelope Cruz, Marion Cotillard, Nicole Kidman, and Sophia Loren.
It’s directed by Rob Marshall (one of the few directors who has a DGA Award and no Oscar), who made the 2002 Best Picture-winner Chicago. From this trailer, the format of the film looks very similar to that film where the musical sequences are served up as surreal asides–big gaudy stage-set productions that act more like a Greek chorus than simply people breaking out in song at random intervals.
Frankly, that sounds like it’ll work perfectly for adapting 8 1/2. Anyway, check out the trailer in HD over at Apple or watch it below. If it doesn’t make you really jazzed for this film, then step out of your damn musical-denial and learn to have a good time!
