This one really needs Russell Crowe with a shield. Unfortunately, we’re going to have to settle for ‘roided out men in tights.
That’s right, folks, Variety reports that the long-running television game show “American Gladiators” is finally getting the much-needed big-screen treatment its fans have been clamoring for. The property, which has had an impressive 20-year run on the small screen, will be produced by Scott Mednick…you know, the guy who is also doing the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot? I see a pattern emerging.
This is all well and good…but then I remember a little movie called The Running Man, which was, for all intents and purposes, a movie adaptation of “American Gladiators” starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and with higher stakes.
That one was a bad movie to be sure, but at least it had a little social commentary and some amazing one-liners like “Sub Zero…now PLAIN Zero!”
To be honest, I don’t know that we really need this little gem of a flick. I mean, sure, we all want to see people fight with foam-padded sticks for an hour and a half, but that’s why God created reality TV, right?
