Well, so much for the threat of piracy.  X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which was leaked online over  month ago, took in a whopping $87 million, destroying the competition with its adamantium claws.

x_men_origins_wolverineposter1Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, the definition of summer couter-programming, came in at number two.  The Matthew McConaughey romantic comedy finished below most industry expectations with $15.3 million

The rest of the top ten were all holdovers, with 17 Again ($6.4 million) and Monsters vs. Aliens ($5.8 million) rounding out the top five.  The Paramount/Dreamworks animated film has grossed a stellar $182.4 million in six weeks.

The Soloist dropped 42% in its second week to pull in $5.6 million at number six, and seven belonged to the nature documentary Earth ($4.2 million).

Fighting claimed the not-so-coveted number eight spot with $4.2 million, a fairly large 62% drop.  Finally, Hannah Montana: The Movie and State of Play rounded out the top ten with $2.7 and $3.7 million respectively.

Battle for Terra, the animated sci-fi film, landed with a thud, debuting with a gross of just $1.1 million.  Someone somewhere is wishing they’d made the right call and sent this one straight to video.
