Venom movie seeks to undo the damage caused by Spider-Man 3 (So bad)!

Venom fans rejoice.  While Sam Raimi screwed the pooch on the character of Venom (who he admitted disliking from the get go) in his wildly uneven and poorly thought-out Spider-Man 3, Sony is letting a new crop of filmmakers have a crack at the character.

venomRhett Reese and Paul Wernick of Zombieland fame are in charge of this one.  Sci-Fi Wire has more.

My experience with the Venom character is limited to the Spider-Man animated television series…in which the character was a badass.  I’m interested in how you do a Venom movie with no Spider-Man at all, and I’m guessing that this movie will not even make an attempt to keep continuity with the Spider-Man films.

I have mixed feelings about that.  I love how Marvel is creating an umbrella of continuity and interconnectivity with their properties, and I’d love for Spider-Man to be a part of that.  But I guess the Sony ship has sailed.

I’m reserving judgement on this one, but I’m cheering for it.  Venom could be a very interesting and cool character if he is fully realized.

Venom in the comics was a *severe* badass. My heart was broken when Topher Grace turned him into the pathetic, chirpy bastard that showed up in Spidey 3. When Venom got his own comic, he was a roving anti-hero who lived by his own rules and kicked ass along the way. I’m not sure how marketable an authentic screen translation of that would be, but hopefully whatever they come up with will at least be better than Punisher: War Zone.

They movie Venom was ok at best, only because it is hard to translate complex characters to the big screen for a movie. Venom from the comics is complex because only because he has been around 20 years now.
The extent of “venom” in Spiderman 3 should have only been as the Alien Costume. Venom deserves his own movie, as the sole villian. Just too many villians in Spiderman 3. I would have used only Sandman, and only Sandman.
Spiderman 4 would have been to show the Black suits dark influences. Ending in his seperating himself from it. Still no Venom however. Spiderman 5 however should be about Venom, seeking revenge…The story of Venom is best served told in Stages over 3 films.
