Hi, all. Quaid here with your weekly rundown of the theatrical grosses for the weekend of April 5, 2009.
The big news of the weekend was the impressive power of Fast and Furious, the third sequel of the franchise. The movie brought in $72 million dollars, smashing the record for best April opening (previously held by 2003′s Anger Management which took in $42.2 millon).
Miramax’s Adventureland, director Greg Mottola’s follow up to the smash hit Superbad, debuted at number six for the weekend, pulling in $6 million. The film should have decent legs and will probably clean up on video, but its debut is still a bit of a disappointment.
The rest of the top ten were holdovers. Monsters vs. Aliens came in at number two with $33.5 million while The Haunting in Connecticut held on to the number three spot with $9.6 million.
Rounding out the top five were the Nick Cage thriller Knowing with $8.1 million and I Love You, Man with $7.9 million.
Number seven was Duplicity ($4.3 million), eight was Race to Witch Mountain ($3.4 million), and the number nine spot belonged to the John Cena actioner 12 Rounds ($2.3 million).
Taken managed to hang on to a spot in the top ten for the tenth week in a row, taking in $1.6 million. The sleeper hit has raked in an impressive $139.5 million.
