Hi all, Quaid here with your weekly quick rundown of movies hitting theaters this Friday, April 3, 2009.
First on the list we have Fast and Furious. This is the fourth movie in this car-porn franchise (see, they just dropped the “the’s” from the title of the original so it wouldn’t feel like a sequel!), and it sees the return of Vin Diesel and Paul Walker to the driver’s seats. Look for this one to bomb critically and clean up at the box-office.
The other big release this week is Greg Mottola’s follow-up to the smash hit Superbad. Adventureland chronicles the summer exploits of a group of teenagers working summer jobs at an amusement park. While the trailers have set this up as a Superbad clone (at least in tone), early word is that this has a lot more heart and plot than Mottolo’s other film. This one has Ryan Reynolds in it, though, so I am interested. He was the best thing about the not-terribly-good Waiting.
There are also quite a few movies coming out on the limited release front. Sony Pictures Classics is releasing both the baseball rags-to-riches indie drama Sugar and the theater-themed period piece Paris 36.
IFC is releasing The Escapist, a prison escape movie starring Brian Cox, and Roadside Attractions gives us Alien Trespass, an homage to the 1950′s B-movie.
Finally, we get Zooey Deschanel and Paul Dano in Gigantic, “a funny, surreal love story about the anxiety that comes when two people with crazy families collide unexpectedly and fall for each other.” Hmmm.
This week I hope to be checking out Adventureland. Kristen Stewart is adorable.
