Quaid here with your rundown of the figures from this past weekend at the cineplex. No big surprises this week, so I’ll keep it short…
Monsters vs. Aliens had a big weekend at the box-office, absolutely devastating the competition and pulling in $58.2 million. The Dreamworks animated flick is on track to be the biggest 3D opener–ever.
The other big opener this weekend, The Haunting in Connecticut, pulled in a very solid $23 million, surprising many industry analysts. The PG-13 horror film will no doubt have a huge drop-off come next weekend.
The only other new release in the top ten was the John Cena starring, Renny Harlin directed action film 12 Rounds. It came in at number seven with a heavily disappointing $5.3 millon.
The three, four, and five spot were taken up by last week’s holdovers, Knowing, I Love You, Man, and Dupicity (in that order) grossing $14.7, $12.6, and $7.6 million respectively. This is only a 29% drop for I Love You, Man.
Race to Witch Mountain came in at number six with $5.6 million. Watchmen plummeted to number eight with a mere $2.8 million, and Taken made $2.7 million to hold on to the number nine spot. Rounding out the top ten was The Last House on the Left with $2.6 million.
