With the economy in dismal shape, it’s nice to know that at least one company is continuing to find, develop, and pay new(ish) talent.
The trades are saying that Marvel is searching for new writers to handle the barrage of comic book properties the studio is planning to develop over the next few years . How do they plan to search? Well, they’re going to pull from within, picking up to five writers per year and giving them a shot at developing lesser properties. During that year, Marvel owns everything these writers produce, and the studio has the option to extend the deal.
I think this is a great idea. Presumably these writers will 1) love the original properties and 2) have something to prove, so I think they will put a lot of work into story and character.
The flip side of the coin? New writers with no weight might be so eager to please that they will roll over at the first negative studio note they get, and we’ll get watered down crap…
I doubt that will happen though. A studio smart enough to find new writing talent should be smart enough to allow creative freedom and recognize good ideas. Right?
