The original Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D was made for only $60 million. It has made four times that at the international box-office. So even though it wasn’t very well received, it’s no wonder they’re making another one, right?
Kids seem to like it. Families can tolerate it, and Brendan Fraser is always an audience draw. I don’t agree with the man’s choices in movies (because I think he has legitimate talent and don’t want to see it squandered), but you have to hand it to him: he’s found a persona that lets him make millions in multiple franchises.
But what’s the plot? Do they go to the center of the earth…AGAIN?!?!? Nope. The movie is actually being adapted from a spec script by Richard Outten called “Mysterious Travels.” Apparently it blends elements and events of “Gulliver’s Travels,” “Treasure Island,” and “Mysterious Island.”
Yeah, that’s not too much to squeeze into an hour-and-a-half kiddie film.
I suppose I should reserve judgement until I see some images or a trailer or at least a script review for this bad boy. It’s so hard, though, when I know the studio has a list of “must-haves” for this kind of film, many of which are inherently annoying to me.
Is anyone looking forward to this? Let me know…I promise not to judge. Much.
