Zack Snyder’s excellent Watchmen adaptation has only been out for a single day, but it’s come up with $25.2 million, but probably won’t be breaking any records. Snyder’s previous film, 300 took in the third-biggest opening ever for an R-rated film with $70.9 million and Watchmen might possibly be on its wat to overtaking that, but it we can rest assured that it won’t be touching number 1, 2003′s The Matrix Reloaded, which earned $91.8 million.
Frankly I’m surprised that it’s making this much. It’s not really something that a lot of mainstream audiences are going to respond to. It’s got superheros and the trailers have awesome visuals, so the opening weekend will be strong, but when word travels around mainstream audiences that the film is too long, too boring, and too weird, don’t expect it to have much staying power (unless, of course, the repeat viewings by people like me that loved it amount to more than I think).
But here’s the real reason you clicked on the headline. The incredible opening credits sequence of the film has been made available online at the official website of yU+Co, the comany that created it. The sequence is an amusing walk through America’s (alternate) history, chronicling the rise and fall of superheros, set to Bob Dylan’s “The Times They Are A-Changing.” Watching it is giving me the itch to go see the movie again right now. If you haven’t yet, this will surely make you want to! Watch it below!
