Darren Aronofsky won three Independent Spirit Awards, including ones for Best Feature and Mickey Rourke for Best Actor in a terrific night for Aronofsky’s excellent The Wrestler. The awards ceremony took place earlier tonight, just one day before the Acacdemy Awards, as is traditional for the Spirit Awards.
The Wrestler won the top prize, beating out Ballast, Frozen River, Rachel Getting Married, and Wendy and Lucy and Rourke managed to best fellow Oscar nominees Sean Penn for Milk and Richard Jenkins for The Visitor, whose director Thomas McCarthy won for his work on the picture. Hopefully Rourke’s win here bodes well for his possible win tomorrow night!
Other notable wins include Charlie Kaufman’s win for Best First Feature for his outstanding directorial debut, Synecdoche New York, Dustin Lance Black (also Oscar nominated and a likely winner, too) for his Milk script, Woody Allen for his Vicky Cristina Barcelona script, (which also won for Best Supporing Female for Penelope Cruz) and Man on Wire for Best Documentary.
