Freddy’s got a brand new bag: “Nightmare” remake director named.

Posted on 12 February 2009 by Quaid

Remakes are not all bad.  I am actually finding myself getting a little excited about the new 13th movie coming out, and I was honestly a big fan of the Texas Chainsaw Remake.

Freddy, though, has always been my favorite 80′s super-villain slasher dude.  The movies, good or bad, were always inventive and cheeky and fun.  Six was pretty terrible, but New Nightmare is so badass it rivals the original in terms of sheer quality.

So now it’s time to start over.  And who is the perfect person to helm this brand-new take on all things Krueger and Elm Street?

Samuel Bayer.

And who in God’s name is that??? It’s the guy who directed Nirvana’s “Smell’s Like Teen Spirit” music video…as well as the video to Blind Mellon’s “No Rain.”

I have no idea how to feel about this.  I’m glad, though, that they are choosing someone slightly “out-of-the-box.”  Freddy requires a different take than the recent slasher remakes.  Going realistic and gritty with him just won’t work.

Going uber-dark and fucked-up, though, will.  So that is what I am hoping for.

I understand rebooting this franchise.  The original series played itself out completely and even ended up being interestingly self-aware.  If this is the only way to get a new Nightmare movie, so be it.

And here is the Blind Mellon video.  Nothing screams postmodern horror master like a kid in a bee costume.

Ohhhh, that’s a pretty cool choice. The “Smells Like Teen Spirit” music video was named the third best video on VH1′s 100 greatest music video countdown back in 2002, and I know I’m not alone in thinking that VH1 is the most credible source in the world when assessing directing talent.

Seriously though, that is a very cool choice. Don’t know if it will work out, but what do they have to lose?

Because I base the ideas of “cool choice” on what VH1 picked as their greatest videos of all time? I’m in the wait and see category. But it better be fucked up and dark and scary.

I’m tired of these horror movies being directors’ “first foray” into filmmaking. As if they can cut their teeth making mistakes REIMAGINEING AN ICON! The fans dole out shitloads of cash for these things, enough to afford a-list directors, and we deserve to have the material approached seriously.

But I’m still pulling for this one to work.
