Cruise. Denzel. Cronenberg? I’m there.

David “Gynecological Tools for Mutant Women” Cronenberg is directing not only Denzel Washington(!), but the one and only Tom Cruise(!!) in a film about a couple of guys who get sexually aroused by airplane crashes!!…No, wait. No, it’s just a CIA thriller.

Cruise, still in final talks, and Washington will star as two rival spies who, after years of trying to kill each other, have to join forces and bring down a massive band of conspirators in The Matarese Circle. Based on a novel by Robert Ludlum (the Bourne series), the script is from Derek Haas and Michael Brandt who adapted last summer’s Wanted.¬† It certainly sounds like Cronenberg is climbing the ladder to mainstream Hollywood even higher than he did with A History of Violence and Eastern Promises.

However, if those films were any indication, then we can look forward to Cronenberg continuing to challenge and potentially¬†alienate unsuspecting audiences. Personally, I was never much for the Bourne movies, but if someone had asked me, “Hey Shep, would you like to see David Cronenberg direct The Bourne Redundancy?” I would have certainly said “Yes, plese.”

No word yet if Cruise and Washington will engage in a naked knife-fight, but I can dream, can’t I? For the full story, check out The Hollywood Reporter!
